What it means to be able to play Girls Football

What it means to girls/women to be able to play football in the club

By Heather Blackbyrne

I started playing football at the age of 7. I joined the u8 boy’s team in Enniskerry. After that sunny hour spent in the Bog Meadow in 1997, I was hooked!

I played with the boys until I was 14. Unfortunately, after the age of 14, girls were not permitted to play with the boys, and at this time, there was no girl’s team in the club for me to play on.

During the break in my playing career, I started coaching in the club. For the past few years I have coached boys aged from 7 to 9. With Enniskerry FC, it is so easy to get involved in the club and I was made to feel so welcome.

In 2011, after several years of planning, a senior ladies team was established. As a player who started in the club at the age of 7, it was a brilliant feeling to lead a red and white clad squad out onto the pitch. An even better feeling is that the young girls starting to play football in the club can remain in the club until their playing days are complete.

Enniskerry FC caters so well for players of all abilities, young and old. The club treats boys and girls as equals and creates a friendly and homely atmosphere for the whole community of Enniskerry.
